Yaakov Edrie.

Yaakov was born and raised in Casablanca Morocco. In 1959 along with his parents and seven sisters and brothers immigrated to Israel. In Israel, the family was sent to an absorption center in Or-Akiva. The conditions at the center were very harsh with no running water or electricity.

Elihu, Yaakov's Father, was the only provider while his wife Sadah stayed home to raise the children. Elihu and Sadah had four additional children in Israel bringing the total of children to thirteen. The older children had to be sent to boarding schools in Afula.

After highschool graduation, Yaakov enlisted in the IDF for three years. Once discharged from the Army Yaakov found a job, at a tire factory, to help support his family. For the next five years, Yaakov was working as a youth counselor and was nominated as the manager of the Or-Akiva youth center. All the while Yaakov was studying political science at Haifa University.

In 1983, Yaakov started his political career and was elected to deputy mayor. Later Yaakov has been elected and has served as Or-Kava’s Mayor for the past 3 consecutive terms. In 1998 82% of immigrants voted for him.

Yaakov Edrie has worked hard to help new immigrants find homes and jobs and he understands the trials and tribulations one goes through when moving to a new country. Yaakov Edrie has dedicated him self to improving Or-Akiva and his constituents. A great deal of money and effort has been utilized to improve the schools. Yaakov believes that a good education is key for future prosperity.

He has made sure that all children of Or-Akiva have the same opportunities. The schools are now equipped with new computers, indoor and outdoor sport facilities, and first rate teachers and principals. But most importantly, children of low-income families are given free computers so that they are afforded the same amount of time and exposure as other children and are not left behind.
